James Miller, CPA, CEPA, founder of Motion AI Systems
JAMES MILLER · CPA · CEPA

I've seen what good data infrastructure does to a company. Most companies don't have it.

Founder of Motion AI Systems. 25+ years across finance, operations, IT, and accounting, including M&A Advisor on 70+ acquisitions at Vital Records Control, where I rebuilt the company's reporting infrastructure from Excel spreadsheets to a Power BI environment running on 100M+ rows. This is the work I want to do for more companies.

Why this exists

For 25+ years, I've had a front-row seat to how mid-market companies really operate. I have studied the financials, systems, and reporting of hundreds of companies across industries, ownership structures, and management styles.

One pattern showed up over and over. Most companies were working harder than they needed to, because their data, systems, and reporting were not connected.

The data was scattered. Reports were rebuilt by hand. Leaders were looking at different numbers. Owners knew something was off, but they did not always know what good looked like, or who to call.

And now everyone is talking about AI.

AI is the easy part. The hard part is the data underneath it. Most companies do not have the foundation they need to understand and run their business.

At Vital Records Control, I got to work on this firsthand. When I arrived, the business ran on Excel spreadsheets, outdated macros, and manual reporting, with constant debate over which numbers were right. Teams were hitting row limits, losing context, and rebuilding the same reports month after month.

The C-Suite backed the vision, and I built the system. Databases, data models, and Power BI reporting that connected the business around one version of the truth.

Today that system runs on more than 100 million rows of data, used by operations managers, VPs, the CEO, CFO, and board of directors. More importantly, the business now has a shared operating language. Leaders see the same numbers, track the same KPIs, catch issues faster, and make decisions with confidence.

That experience clarified something for me.

This work is not about dashboards. It is about helping people run better businesses.

It is about helping owners see what is really happening inside their company. It gives CFOs and operators clearer visibility, less manual work, and the KPIs they need.

Growing companies deserve the same data foundation enterprises rely on, sized to their reality.

That is why Motion AI Systems exists.

We help mid-market companies connect their data, automate manual reporting, cut wasted effort, and build the visibility to operate with clarity, discipline, and confidence.

One founder. A team of specialists.

Motion AI Systems started as one practitioner with 25 years of scar tissue. It is growing into a team of developers who each own one part of the stack, so the person building your data model does exactly that, all day, every day.

Data engineering

Microsoft Fabric, medallion architecture, and pipelines that survive contact with real source systems.

Analytics

Power BI semantic models and executive reporting that holds up in a board meeting.

Automation and integration

Power Automate, Logic Apps, and APIs that make the systems you already own talk to each other.

AI agents

Copilot Studio and custom orchestration, built on governed data with human checkpoints.

Specialists build. The founder leads every engagement and stays accountable for the answer.

What I bring

  • /01

    CPA, Certified Public Accountant

I read financial statements the way most data consultants read database schemas. When we talk about your numbers, we're speaking the same language as your CFO and your auditor.
  • /02

    CEPA, Certified Exit Planning Advisor

Exit-readiness isn't an event. It's an infrastructure problem. I help companies build the data and operational rigor that drives valuation up before the diligence team ever arrives.
  • /03

    MS Accounting, University of Memphis

Concentrated in Tax and Data Analytics. The combination matters: most of the consultants who can build Power BI dashboards can't read a 10-K, and most of the ones who can read a 10-K can't build a Power BI dashboard.
  • /04

    M&A Advisor, Vital Records Control

Financial analysis and due diligence on 70+ acquisition targets, including the credit memos and bank packages that got deals approved. Post-close, I built the reporting infrastructure that tracks the deal pipeline and surfaces board-level KPIs across the combined business.
  • /05

Microsoft Stack: Fabric, Power BI, Power Automate, Azure

Why Microsoft? Most mid-market companies are already on Microsoft 365, which makes Fabric the natural destination. If a company isn't there yet, getting them there is part of the work. The integration is real, the security model is enterprise-grade, and the AI roadmap is funded.

Where I'm showing up

I do a lot of speaking, programming, and community work. The only way the mid-market gets better at this is if the people who know how share what they know. Some of the recent and upcoming work:

A life beyond the dashboards

Husband, father of five, frequent visitor of zoos with very loud opinions on which animals are the best. I love nature and travel, and I am happiest outdoors or somewhere new with the family. In quieter hours: complex puzzles, nonfiction, Mozart, and artisan loose-leaf tea. I believe the work matters most when the people doing it have something real to come home to.

Let's see if we should work together.

No pitch deck, no proposal pressure. Tell me what's slowing you down. I'll tell you whether Motion AI Systems is the right fit. If it's not, I'll point you toward who is.
